Cutting Down Your Moving Day Costs
A household move is expensive. Whether you’re moving across town or across state or across country, it’s going to be expensive to hire a team of movers to actually move your things, and the more you have, the more expensive it’ll likely be. Household moving quotes and prices are primarily based on the weight of your household goods, and this is important to understand because it means that you can manipulate, a bit, how much you will pay for your household moving services. If you’re interested in shipping your household goods, you should try to cut down your moving costs so you have more cash on hand to worry about all the little things that come with a major relocation.
For starters, donate old clothes or have a garage sale. Not only will this cut down on how much you actually need to pack, but a garage sale is a great way to get rid of a lot of things that you really don’t want or need to have shipped, and it’s going to put a bit of cash into your pocket to boot. But more to the point, it’s going to cut down on how much you’re moving, which will ultimately cut down on your price. Why move a bunch of things that you’ll never really use and that’s already sitting in storage? It’s just going to cost you more money to move it, and once it’s at your new place it’ll probably just go back in storage, like they always do. Donation is also a great way to get rid of things you don’t want or need to move, particularly after the garage sale has concluded; just take everything that didn’t sell down to Goodwill or the Salvation Army, and watch as your moving costs start to drop.
You’ll want to make sure that you mention any additions or subtractions to what you’re moving, though, if you’ve already started working with a moving company prior to a garage sale or any donations, as it will affect the price you pay – even with a binding estimate. That’s why it’s recommended that you start clearing your stuff out and getting rid of things you don’t want prior to contacting your moving companies.
But even if you’ve already booked with a mover, you can still get rid of things you don’t want to move. Just make sure to let them know.
