Auto Shipping Glossary: The Auto Transport Representative
When you’re transporting your vehicle from one location to another it’s going to be a lot easier for you if you have one contact person that handles all the details of your shipment. Most auto transport companies assign representatives to customers based on who booked the order, which makes it great because every time you call you should be able to talk to your representative about your shipment and have one contact person to deal with all your shipping needs.
Auto transport representatives are knowledgeable about the car shipping industry and they understand how things work, which means that you should be able to get your vehicle shipped without any undue stress or major problems.
Of course, the car shipping industry is also full of thousands upon thousands of companies, most of which have a stable of auto transport representatives that can help you out. And typically, these representatives are paid minimum wage (or close to it), and more often than not they don’t like their job. And really you can’t blame them – if you worked in an auto transport company you’d understand just how stressful the auto transport representatives’ job really is. They don’t just deal with one customer; they often juggle upwards of ten or fifteen at a time, depending on the size of the auto transport company.
Juggling that many orders at once is a pain, and more often than not any problems that relate to your shipment – like it not getting picked up on time – has nothing to do with the work your representative is doing; they’re just so dependent on other people doing their jobs that they have little control on many details of your shipment. Offices that run well usually have representatives handling four or five customers concurrently and a separate dispatch office, which is a whole separate part of your shipment.
Your transportation representative should be your go-to contact for all things pertaining to your auto transportation. They will handle the payment information and how much is going to be paid to who, as well as taking all your information and making sure that your order is correct. They will coordinate with the driver once your vehicle has been dispatched and will keep you informed of where the truck is in relation to your pickup or delivery locations.
