When you ship a vehicle to another part of the country, you should realize that you won’t have access to it – that’s kind of obvious, we think, but what we’re driving at is the fact that unless you have another way to get around while your vehicle is being shipped, you’re going to be stuck walking, or taking the bus, or relying on friends and family to get around town until your vehicle is delivered. Not that bumming rides is inherently a bad thing – on the contrary, some friends are happy to help their motor-vehicle-impaired confidants, especially your broke ones! But seriously, having another way to get around is something that you’re going to want to figure out, and we have a few tips to help you get started.
If you can afford it, a cab really is the best way to go. Being able to be picked up and dropped off pretty much whenever you need it is a great way to get around when you don’t have your own wheels. Taxicabs can either be flagged down (if you’re in New York City) or scheduled ahead of time (if you live almost anywhere else in the country), so it’s not like they’re exceptionally hard to find or anything. But the expenses can add up quick, so you’ll want to consult with your purse or wallet before committing to taking a taxi everywhere you go. Uber and Lyft are also options, though they tend to be a lot more expensive due to pretty crappy business practices.
If you can’t afford a taxi because you’re like the other millions of Americans out there living paycheck to paycheck, public transportation is always an option if you live in an area that has a decent system. Of course, a lot of cities that aren’t part of major metro areas don’t have any public transportation at all, so if you’re living in one of the myriad places with no buses, you may be stuck walking. Of course, many of the smaller cities and towns with no public transportation really don’t need them considering they’re so small you could walk from one side to the other in a matter of minutes, but still – buses are nice.
