The Mazda CX-9 is a full-size crossover SUV built and sold by Mazda. Built on the same platform as the Ford Edge, the Mazda CX-9 was first released in late 2006, and while it shares a lot of cosmetic similarities to the Mazda CX-7 (now discontinued), they do not share a platform. The CX-9, since its inception, has allowed drivers the option of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, to adapt to various situations while driving. The CX-9 currently comes with two different engines, a 3.5L MZI V6 or a 3.7L MZI V6, which is basically just the Ford Cyclone engine put into a Mazda. The Ford Cyclone engine is Ford’s newest engine and was built to do two things: 1) replace the aging Mondeo engine lineup, which was used up until 2007; and 2) to increase fuel economy and power while still meeting newer emissions requirements. On both things, Ford was able to succeed; Mazda, which has had a working partnership with Ford for decades now, rebrands the Ford Cyclone engine as the MZI, as they did with the older Mondeo V6 engines during previous years. The CX-9, therefore, is about as modern a car as you can find, and brings a good combination of power and efficiency that has seen decent sales. Rumors of a second generation have cropped up here and there, but no official word from Mazda yet as to when it will be released. The CX-9 has, however, had several facelifts, notably in 2010 and 2013 – these are not considered to be entire new automotive generations, however.
When it comes to actually shipping a Mazda CX-9, you probably won’t have too hard a time getting it moved. Though it’s a full-size crossover, it’s still a crossover, which by design are smaller than standard sport utility vehicles like the Ford Explorer or the Expedition. This means less overall weight, and while the Mazda CX-9 weighs about 4,500 pounds, the Ford Expedition weighs almost 6,000 pounds – that’s a big difference. You’ll likely find that a full-size crossover SUV will cost about the same as a small-to-mid-size sport utility vehicle, or a very small (i.e. Ford Ranger small) pickup truck, as they are roughly the same size in terms of weight.
