Auto Transport to and from Salem, Oregon

Salem 1Salem is a city in and the county seat of Marion County, and also the capital of the state of Oregon. Home to over 154,000 residents, Salem is the third-largest city in the state of Oregon after Portland and Eugene and is the principal city of the Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area, which spans much of the central Willamette Valley and has a population of over 390,000.

Salem was founded in 1842 and was chosen as the capital of the Oregon Territory in 1851. The city was subsequently incorporated in 1857, and since then it has remained as the capital of Oregon State. Today, Salem makes up a part of the Portland-Salem-Eugene stretch along Interstate 5, a major economic and commercial hub of the Pacific Northwest and a major part of the Willamette Valley region of Oregon.

Salem, as mentioned, is large enough to anchor its own metropolitan area, which is an important thing to have when you’re looking to ship a vehicle to or from a specific city. Having a metropolitan area, even a smaller one like Salem’s, often allows easier access to various parts of the area for car transport companies, which helps to keep prices low and transit times quicker.

Salem’s is obviously much smaller than many others across the country, but that’s okay; the metro area is still attractive to carriers that service the Pacific Northwest, especially considering that it sits less than an hour south of Portland and the trip really isn’t all that bad for an interstate trucking company. That said, Salem’s location in the Pacific Northwest tends to keep prices a bit higher, but that’s due to its geographical location and the isolation that the Pacific Northwest states enjoy, so you can’t really look too much into that.

It doesn’t help that there aren’t that many ways into or out of the city that are convenient for car shipping companies. The only major route of note that services Salem is Interstate 5, which is arguably the most heavily-traveled interstate on the west coast and one of the main transportation routes through the western United States.

It links to every major east-west interstate as well, which gives auto shippers more leeway in terms of the routes that they choose, but it’s entirely possible that you can save a lot of time or money by moving your pickup or delivery location out of Salem and further south to Eugene or north to Portland, depending on where you’re shipping from.

One thing you likely won’t have to worry about when shipping to or from Salem is the weather. When it comes to shipping a vehicle, weather can play an important factor in your price, because bad weather, including snowstorms, hurricanes, tornadoes and other nasty things, can really impact carrier availability in a region and can adversely affect pickup and delivery timing and locations.

Salem doesn’t see a lot of snow – rain, yes, but snow and ice not so much. It’s a warmer climate than the more northern areas, but during the winter the weather tends to stay cold but not enough to snow, giving your shippers more access to areas of Salem. This could help your price, but it depends heavily on where you’re shipping from and to.
