Oak Lawn is a village located in Cook County, in the U.S. state of Illinois. Home to a population of over 56,700 residents, Oak Lawn is a major suburb of Chicago, the third-largest city in the United States, and one of many surrounding villages in the Chicago metro area. First settled in the early 1840’s, Oak Lawn has been incorporated since 1909, though until it was incorporated it was known by several different names including Black Oak Grove and then Black Oaks, then Black Oak, before finally settling on Oak Lawn following its incorporation. Growth was relatively slow until the outbreak of World War II, when manufacturing exploded in the area to help fuel the war effort, and today the village’s economy has shifted from manufacturing to more service-based industries including healthcare, retail and education.
